UK Official to Release Casino Plans
LONDON --
Today, the UK government will release formal plans to expand the countries' Casino and Gaming industry with 16 new, large casino establishments across the territory. The announcement is the result of an industry-wide review requested by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
UK Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe will make the statement to Parliament, including the number of new slot machines and table-games to be admitted. Sutcliffe will outline regulations for the gambling industry such as the need to pay 4 million pounds a year to The Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT). The RIGT is an independent account given voluntary funding by the industry to foster advancements in the research of problem gambling and addiction.
According to Reuters, Sutcliffe's statement should also end rumors about a possible
"supercasino" in Manchester, but these plans were buried by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The idea of a mega-casino, similar to those seen in Las Vegas and Macau, drew strong opposition from certain factions within Britain, including church and morality leaders.
Manchester was the winner of a competition to receive a Las Vegas-style casino under former Prime Minister Tony Blair as a way to create jobs and stimulate poorer subdivisions. Gordon Brown took office in Great Britain on June 27, 2007, 3 days after becoming leader of the Labour Party.
