Davydenko Declares Tennis Online Gambling Scandal Non-Existent
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
After being cleared of wrongdoing by a year-long investigation, tennis star Nikolay Davydenko has asserted that tennis is free of corrupt gaming influences. Davydenko said to reporters about suspicions against him involving Internet gambling rumors, "What happened last year I think was a big mistake.”
Davydenko became the poster boy for concerns about undue gaming influences affecting the outcome of matches when he suddenly retired in a match against a major underdog. Records at online casinos showed an unusual and inordinate amount of wagering against the Russian star in the match.
The whispers of scandal forced the Association of Tennis Professionals to address the problem of gambling. Laptops were banned from courtsides, investigative bodies formed, and relations with online gambling sites improved so as to communicate betting oddities.
Several players were disciplined for violations of ethics in regard to gambling, although none had the stature of Davydenko. Rumors continued to follow Davydenko, at one time the fourth-ranked player in the world, as he took early and unexpected exits at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
But the intensive investigation failed to produce concrete evidence against Davydenko, and in September he was cleared by the ATP. When asked about gambling in his sport, Davydenko said ,“I don’t think tennis really has any problem with gambling. Tennis is clean because they tried to investigate every player, not just me.”
An ostrich sticking his head into sand may feel safe, but it's also good to have full-time investigators overseeing tennis as well.
