Tennis Players Suspended for Gambling Sue for Reinstatement
MIAMI, FLORIDA --
Four tennis players facing suspensions for gambling activity are suing to get the penalties lifted. The four Italian players say they are being discriminated against by extra harsh punishment as a publicity move by the Association of Tennis Professionals, eager to showa determined stand against sports betting.
Giorgio Galimberti, Alessio Di Mauro, Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali all admit gambling, but say it was for very little money. They say online gaming operator Interwetten gave personal information on them to the ATP as part of a deal to secure sponsorship of a tennis tournament.
The sports betting site ended up the sponsor of the Interwetten Austrian Open.
The players also contend the rulebook is too vague and ambiguous in its terms, and is provided only in English.
Tennis has been under a media spotlight after rumors that a top player, Nikolay Davydenko, had been involved in match-fixing surfaced. Davydenko was cleared after a year-long investigation, but tennis officials severely tightened security and adopted a no-tolerance policy.
Another player beginning a suspension for gambling, Mathieu Montcourt, was found dead last week at age 24. Authorities say initial autopsy reports indicate the young tennis pro died of natural causes.
