Taiwan Votes Against Casino Gambling
TAIPEI, TAIWAN --
In a surprise to national and local authorities, residents of the Taiwanese island of Penghu voted to reject the establishment of a casino in their locale. The proposed casino would have been the first in Taiwan, and was offered to Penghu to help the remote area jump-start its struggling economy.
But residents said they feared tourists would not make the casino a destination, and crime in the area would increase with the establishment of gambling.
The Taiwan legislature earlier this year removed a law against gambling in the country, and agreed to promote tourism generated by casino gambling as a way to help create economic development in remote areas like Penghu.
The vote against the casinos went 17,359 to 13,397.
As many as three casinos were foreseen by Penghu officials, who were already being courted by Crown Casinos, MGM Mirage, and Harrah's Entertainment.
Residents said that illegal gambling is everywhere in Taiwan, and is closely associated with criminal elements. Many expected those same gangs to relocate to Penghu if it became a gaming mecca.
