Tennis Collects from Online Gambling on Australian Open
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA --
Tennis has prove itself the most farsighted of sports in embracing gambling, not only to ward off corruption but also to profit itself financially. Under a new arrangement, Betfair Australia will pay a piece of every gambling bet placed on the Australian Open to Tennis Australia, the event's non-profit host.
Tennis has had a number of incidents involving suspected tainting of match results by gambling influences. But, rather than inadvertently aid the cheats by driving the betting exchanges underground, tennis has made online betting sites a partner, working with online gambling operators to help detect suspicious wagering patterns and force gamblers to establish transparent identities.
Now gambling will also help pay for the running of events like the Australian Open. Betfair makes all bets and the details on their authors available to Tennis Australia.
“The key to managing integrity is giving the relevant authorities complete access,” Betfair CEO Andrew Twaits told BusinessWeek. “Everything is out in the open.”
While Betfair's contribution is undisclosed, it is said to be relatively small. Still, the symbiotic nature of sport and gambling is finally being embraced, by at least one sport.
“We certainly believe that responsible gambling is part of Australian culture,” said Steve Ayles of Tennis Australia. “We can also ensure that money goes back into developing the sport.”
