World Cup Soccer to Be Sports Betting Event of the Year
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA --
Internet sports books are highly anticipating the World Cup next summer, as the soccer championship promises to be the international sports betting crown jewel, possibly setting all-time gambling records. South Africa, the host country, is already granting exceptions to allow gambling on the World Cup to proceed unencumbered by national law.
This week, the country's National Gaming Board announced both local and foreign bookmakers would be allowed temporary licenses to take bets at the ten stadiums hosting matches. Cruise ships in dock will have to close their casinos as always, but will be permitted to handle gambling action on the soccer.
While South Africa continues to stall its approved plan for regulating online gambling, no one wants to be the politician to try to throw a wet blanket on the excitement brewing from the World Cup, which promises to be the tourist, economic, and publicity extravaganza the country desperately desires.
Spain is listed by sports betting services as the early favorite, a 4/1 choice. Brazil is second choice, despite its inclusion in the "Group of Death," the traditional name for the foursome with the toughest early round competition, a 5/1 pick.
Gambling experts are predicting billions in action for the summer soccer showdown.
