Russian President Brooks No Delays in Exiling Gambling
MOSCOW, RUSSIA --
Russian law passed two years ago requires all casinos and gambling houses outside four new gaming zones to close by July 1st, with all future gambling restricted to the four distant regions of Russia. President Medvedev this week told subordinates there can be no delay or extension granted for the start of the gambling ban.
“It is imperative that these rules go into effect in due time. There will be no revisions, no pushing back despite the lobbying efforts of various businesses,” Medvedev told Tax Service director Mikhail Mokretsov.
Over 500 gaming establishments exist in Moscow, all of them slated to either change the nature of their business or close in the next two months. Casino owners say they won't be able to sustain their businesses as bars or restaurants. Operators also say they don't have time to erect new structures in the zones.
Medvedev faces a powerful gambling lobby, that has spread its wealth throughout the Russian legislature and bureaucracy.
Mokretsov assured Medvedev that the tax department is prepared to “administer the business in the four gambling zones”.
Medvedev praised the tax director, while warning aloud again about the importance he attaches to proceeding on schedule. He told Mokretsov, "You have to control this process, and the activities of gambling establishments must cease on June 30.”
