Quebec Minister Says Online Gambling Already Exists
QUEBEC, CANADA --
Quebec's Finance Minister says the province's plan to operate online gambling through Loto-Quebec will not increase problem gambling. According to Raymond Bachand, all the online casinos one could wish for are already active, just not regulated or controlled by the government.
Public health officials said that the plan to expand the lottery to include Internet gambling would increase the number of players, and therefore increase problem gambling. But Bachand replied that the online casino plan is devised for more reasons than simple governmental greed for revenue.
“It’s not for monetary reasons that Sweden and Great Britain and the northern European countries have gone into (regulating online gambling)," said Bachand Thursday. “The role of the state is to channel gambling in a responsible manner.”
Bachand argues that online gambling will not go away if the government acts like an ostrich with its head in the sand, a view different from many US gambling opponents. He says letting the lottery run Internet games will prevent the flow of money to organized crime.
The minister acknowledged a small percentage of the population has an issue with compulsive gambling, and promised to fund counseling and treatment. Studies around the globe have shown that percentage remains consistent regardless of gambling expansion, even when the number of casual gamblers increases or decreases dramatically.

People need to really think about on line gambling. There are many that despise it for many reasons. Many government officials and hard working citizens simply say no because of the dangerous implications they believe it can cause.
Unfortunately we all need to get over it and get on with it. The money spent every night on online bingo's, poker rooms, casino's, and sporting events is huge. Not one cent of this money is taxed and that is an absolute sin. No taxes means no funding for health and education programs.
To put everything into perspective stop and think that just a few years ago the overall wagers on Thouroughbred Racing in the U.S. for the full year exceeded three billion dollars. Unfortunately the amount of illigal wagering on horse racing during that same period in that same Country exceeded five billion dollars. No taxes were collected from the illegal wager, no money for programs, healthcare, education, senior's benefits for the poor, nothing.
To say no and allow it to go on every night behind closed doors of Canadian households is wrong. We need to accept it and tax it now.
