Asian Police Arrest Many Soccer Gamblers, No Terrorists
LONDON, ENGLAND --
Interpol revealed this week that thousands of man-hours and millions of dollars were spent in order to shut down illegal gambling on soccer. Despite seemingly far more pressing agendas, police around the globe and especially in Asia found the time to detain over 1300 individuals linked to gambling rings that handled action on the recently completed Euro Cup 2008.
Law enforcement from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Chinese provinces of Macau and Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Thailand participated in an operation called Soccer Gambling II. Obviously, Asian police are far behind the U.S. military in naming operations; this one screamed for a name like Eagle Striker or Net Enforcer.
Interpol coordinated the two-month task force, which surely did not strain the notably limited international police force from primary responsibilities regarding international terrorism.
This year's raids were a sequel to the 2007 Soccer Gambling; unlike many sequels, this one featured 3 times as many arrests and 25 times the volume of cash seized, perhaps due to the timing of the Euro Cup falling on this year.
Authorities were so pleased with themselves after their gargantuan waste of public monies, they immediately announced plans for Soccer Gambling III: the Beijing Olympics, which will use many of the same resources to prevent Mr. Ngyuen the grocer from wagering on which pole vaulter has the biggest pole, or some such.
