Online Casinos Beat FTF in Court

By Lee Rockwell on May 3, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! LIEGE, BELGIUM -- Online casino operators are able to breathe a little easier this wek after a court in Liege ruled that the French Tennis Federation could not prevent three bookmakers from accepting wagers on the sport.

Betfair, bwin and Ladbrokes were sued by the FTF on the basis that the gambling plays they accepted on tenis were staining the sport, and had caused damages from which the books were profitting. The judge ruled there was no demonstration that the bookmakers were in any way responsible for illegal betting or fixing matches.

Further, the judge found that establshed regulations by the European Union in licensing the books made for transparency and prevention of potential problems which could affect FTF play.

A case in Paris mirrors the Belgian one, and will probably be heavily inmfluenced by this verdict.

Online casino operator bwin also has a defamation suit against the FTF, which may also feel the effects of this decision.

It was most important to avoid a precedent-setting decision that would establish blame upon legal casinos for the actions of parties beyond their control. If online gambling sites had been found to contribute to damages caused by public scandals and match fixing, they would be financially responsible for a huge cost; and the banning of sports booking may have swept Europe.
