Online Casino Technology Prevents Sports Fixing
LONDON, ENGLAND --
European online casino operators are telling lawmakers that Internet gambling prevents cheating on sports bets because would-be fixers are unable to generate wagers large enough to profit from their schemes. According to industry representatives, technology at online gaming sites significantly reduces the effectiveness of match corruption.
Michael Summer, public relations manager at sports betting site Interwetten, told Deutsche Welle that scandals sweeping soccer did not earn profits online, because systems in place would identify suspicious betting patterns.
"All of our customers are identifiable and can't get away with using pseudonyms and false identities more than once or twice," Summer said. "That makes Internet gaming operators far more secure than traditional betting shops."
Proposition bets and lower division play are especially scrutinized, as this is where corruption seems to most often manifest itself. But limits on both odds and wager amounts control any temptation to use these avenues to scam bookmakers.
Instead, online casinos regulated in Europe say the problem lies with illegal and unregulated gambling operators in Asia. Organized crime is often behind such operations, once again demonstrating the safety inherent in properly regulated and licensed online gambling.
