Online Gambling Comes to Nintendo Wii
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
Excitebots, the new Wii game from Nintendo, carefully treads into a new area that reviewers have called the first step to gambling on the system. Prizes awarded as players advance through the game can be risked against future performance, introducing the elements of gambling to the online video network for the first time.
Currently, players only wager on their own performance, against the house or game, rather than betting each other. Still, the concept of risk and consideration has entered gaming, and gamers are predicting a rapid development of gambling video gaming.
The Excitebots version awards stars for achievements in the game. When a new race or game prepares to start, players can choose how many stars to risk on their upcoming performance.
Come in last, and find yourself possibly wiped out, but the higher the finish, the higher the multiplier, only luck determines the final effect.
Gamer Harold Fontes says,"It's not like gambling on who wins Maddaen or whatever doesn't already happen everywhere. Thgis is just the tiny first step of the gaming companies realizing what drives players, the competition and a need to keep serious score. Money is serious."
Online gaming reviewer Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica says of Excitebots,"Online play would have been fun anyway, but with gambling? ... There is also a mode where you play poker by picking up cards scattered over the track to gain the best hand. I only wish the game came with a cigar or two."
