Greek Online Gambling Monopoly Gets New Leader
ATHENS, GREECE --
Greek gambling operator OPAP, one of the largest betting companies in the world, underwent a management shakeup as previous executives resigned so that the newly elected socialist government could put its own choices at the helm. Ioannis Spanoudakis is the gaming company's new CEO.
Spanoudakis is known for having been the managing director of the 2004 Athens Olympics Organizing Committee. Previously, he also worked for Dow Chemicals. Charis Stamatopoulos is the new Chairman of the Board of OPAP, coming from a position as Chairman of the Athens Airport.
OPAP has a monopoly on sports betting and lotteries in Greece. All online gambling is presently illegal in Greece, although EC investigators are examining Greek laws to see that they do not prevent competition from other EU members in services offered by OPAP.
The Greek gaming company manages online betting and lotteries around the world. The company recently made a deal to operate the Arkansas Lottery for the US state.
OPAP's recent acquisition of a US gaming company which operates overseas has led to speculation the company is preparing for a potential opening of the US gambling market.

| I would have thought that the Greek governments prohibition of online gambling was completely against EU regulations, as it prevents EU licensed operators from offering services. However, based on the previous of the EU in loooking into these matters (http://cli.gs/ngm8As ) I doubt that matters all that much! |
