Merriman Arrest For Tequila Chokehold Off Online Casino Books
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA --
Online casinos are known for taking action on many wild propositions never featured elsewhere. Among the recent Internet gambling options has been a proposition regarding the next NFL player to be arrested, but Shawn Merriman's arrest for assaulting Tila Tequila won't pay out to any players.
Despite the logic of including Merriman, he was not on the list at casinos carrying the NFL-arrest option. Merriman, a star linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, served a suspension last year for substance abuse, and has seemed to some league observers to have fragile control of his life.
Merriman had been dating reality television figure Tila Tequila when he allegedly prevented her from leaving his house after an argument at 3 in the morning on Sunday. She called police, and accused the 260-pound football player with choking her and throwing her to the ground. Tequila weighs perhaps a hundred pounds.
But Merriman's attorneys say he was acting to preserve her safety, and denied any assault. An unspoken implication was that he had tried to prevent her from driving drunk.
Odds had been offered at online casinos allowing patrons to bet on such players as Buffalo's Marshawn Lynch and Corey McIntyre, Miami's Randy Starks, Tampa Bay's Anthony Mix and New Orleans' Biren Ealy. But neither Merriman nor any other San Diego player was featured, a surprise considering seven incidents between police and Charger players have occurred over the last year or so.
