Jamaican Business Sector Applauds Casino Approval
JAMAICA --
Jamaica recently ended a long national debate over casino gambling with a governmental decision to legalize and license casinos on the island nation. The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, representing local business and entrepreneurs, has now released a statement praising the verdict on casinos.
Like almost all sectors of the global economy, Jamaica's tourist industry has been adversely affected by the world's financial troubles. The PSOJ stated that the establishment of casinos would help mitigate any losses tourism might suffer.
The PSOJ statement went on to note that casino gambling would also stimulate entertainment and dining segments of the economy, and create gains for the Foreign Direct Investment program.
Jamaica's high level of unemployment will also be positively affected by the creation of both temporary and permanent jobs in construction and casino operations.
To assuage the worries of those who opposed the introduction of casinos to Jamaica, the PSOJ release called for a high level of transparency in selection of casino investors licensed, and a regulatory standard equal to best internationally known. Still, the organization asserted, "With regards to concerns raised about the negative effects of casino gaming, the PSOJ is confident that the positives will far outweigh the negatives."
Jamaica's tropical climate and beaches seem a natural fit for casino settings. In order to continue to draw against the tourist meccas surrounding the country in the Carribean, Jamaica's decision to open the land to gambling is compelling.
