Casino Gambling Comes to Guyana
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA --
Guyana's first legal and regulated casino is expected to open any day now. Operations Director Oguz Tayanc announced Friday that the Princess Casino Guyana is ready to begin operations, and that the controversial gambling venue is prepared to restrict gaming to conform to the law.
Only foreign tourists staying at the resort's hotel will be permitted to wager. After passage of the Gambling Prevention Bill of 2006, which allows local licensing of casinos, an amendment was added to prevent citizens of Guyana from playing.
The law was worked as a compromise, with religious groups protesting predicted social costs due to gambling, while lawmakers were eager to enjoy the economic boom that casino gambling can provide.
Tayanc assured local reporters that security and measures had been set up to prevent legal violations by would-be gamblers from inside the country. He said that the hotel was establishing week-long trips for visitors,with gaming only a part of a complete entertainment package.
Guyana expects the new resort to have a sizable impact on tourism. Last year, the country had fewer than 300,000 for the entire year. The casino also created over 150 jobs for Guyanans.
