Lawmakers Discuss Kahnawake Tribe Casinos
MONTREAL, CA --
According to a report this afternoon, the Canadian government is thinking of ways to remove Internet gambling sites operating in the Kahnawake tribal reserve near Montreal. For years, companies have been freely hosting online poker and sports-betting sites on this reserve, without government intervention.
Despite what these companies believe, the Canadian government classifies these operations as illegal internet gambling outfits. Up until now, there has not been any enforcement, however.
Some have said the government could take new steps to prohibit banking institutions and credit cards from authorizing transactions with these casinos. US gaming analysts chuckle when they hear mention of government-controlled financial transactions.
"The US tried to eliminate internet gambling through similar legislation passed in the UIGEA. It's been a miserable failure, one that should be repealed and replaced with legalization. The Canadian government is simply wrong to take action in this manner", said Andrew Hernandez, an online casino industry analyst who believes citizens are safer if online casinos are legalized, regulated, and audited by governing bodies.
Canadian horse racing and lottery interests have been heavily pressuring the government through multi-million-dollar lobbying campaigns to make internet gambling illegal in the country, asking for protectionist policies similar to those in the US market.
