UK Television Stations to Carry Interactive Gambling
LONDON, ENGLAND --
The agency regulating commercial television in the United Kingdom has given consent to the three stations operating under its purview to offer interactive programming, including casino gambling. ITV1, Channel 4 and Five will be able to broadcast roulette and other games, while also offering betting on virtual horse racing and other events.
Ofcom, the government watchdog for television, said allowing the gaming along with shopping networks would give the stations the funds necessary to develop more programs for regular viewing hours. The gambling and shopping shows are restricted to hours between midnight and six a.m.
By placing gaming into the accepted forms of programming, Ofcom officials told opponents of the move that they now had greater control over gambling content, as it previously was treated as advertising.
"The transferring of teleshopping techniques to ordinary commercial television channels is something most people would not welcome," said John Beyer, a spokesman for Mediawatch UK.
Proposals to increase advertising during prime-time viewing were rejected, although programs extending over an hour were granted an extra commercial break.
The decision does not affect the British Broadcasting Company, which does not show commercials, relying instead on a licensing fee for operating funds.
