Sports Gambling Upended by New England Patriot Injury

By Brian Chan on September 11, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- Sports booking has become a precise science over the years. Gamblers are often amazed at the way lines seem to so often come down to a half-point here or there. The Vegas mathematicians who set the numbers can generally be proud of their prescience, rarely leaving their employers exposed.

But this past Sunday, one play turned the field of sports handicapping upside down. The season-ending injury to quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots has caused lines to jump and bookies to scramble.

Las Vegas sportsbooks went so far as to suspend betting on NFL futures, meaning no plays on win total overs and unders, conference championships, or Superbowl winners will be allowed until the numbers are reconsidered.

Looking at the changes on Betfair, an online sports betting service, shows the sudden volatility in NFL numbers. The Patriots, who had been a clear favorite to win this year's Superbowl at 4-1, dropped all the way to 14-1 after Brady's knee was hurt.

The Dallas Cowboys were among the primary receipients of the wagers that shifted away from New England. Early Cowboy bettors were rejoicing, having purchased their tickets at 9-1, while the present online number has half the return, at 9-2.

This all serves as a reminder that, however exact the analysis, conditions are always changing. If anyone believes there is such a thing as a sure bet, they just need to remember last year's New York Giants.
