Betfair Using Horse Racing to Enter US Online Gambling Market
LONDON, ENGLAND --
While other online gambling operators try to stay clear of the US market to maintain a sparkling clean image with which to dazzle the US government if and when it looks to license Internet casinos, Betfair is moving to establish a reputation in the US without breaking laws. Betfair is rapidly growing its holdings in the online horse racing industry.
While the US Department of Justice says all online gambling, in any form, is illegal, for some strange reason, perhaps related to large campaign contributions, horse racing operates on the Internet through domestic operators without a blink from the Attorney General. Churchill Downs is just one of many online racing operators whose sites are somehow forgiven while online poker rooms and Internet casinos undergo dubious persecutions.
Betfair executives have decided to take advantage of the de facto laws in the US to bring its brand to US customers ahead of the anticipated opening of the market. Gerard Cunningham, director of the US operations for Betfair, refers to it as bringing online gambling to the Facebook crowd.
"When other forms of gambling become legal, we'll be ready," says Cunningham. He is even setting up Betfair's US systems with an eye to catering to regional laws, so poker, racing, and casinos might be available in one state, while only racing in another, and racing and table games in a third.
By mimicking the behavior of US domestic operators like Churchill Downs, Betfair and Cunningham expect to keep their record pure while getting a head start on other foreign operators. That 's why Cunningham says "if it's even a grey area we're not going to touch it."
