Bermuda Official Urges Rejection of Port Gambling
HAMILTON, BERMUDA --
A former member of the Bermuda government is asking legislators to vote against a bill allowing cruise ships to keep operating their casinos while docked. Quinton Edness, former Minister of Home Affairs, is pushing for the country's Parliament to reject the Prohibition of Gaming Machines Amendment 2009.
The measure would permit cruise ships to keep gambling tables open and slot machines operating even while in port. Presently, ships are required to shut down gaming operations as they near the island.
Edness says passing the bill would be harmful to the Bermuda economy.
"It will mean persons who would ordinarily go into shops, go sightseeing and do other things, many of them are likely to stay onboard the ship," said the ex-Minister
The bill also faces opposition from Shadow Justice Minister Mark Pettingill, who says it discriminates against people on the grounds of place of origin, which is a violation of the Bermuda Constitution. He says all non-passengers, including Bermuda citizens, would be discriminated against, as only those riding the ships would be able to gamble.
.Dr. Ewart Brown, who is both Premier and Tourism Minister, disagrees with Edness and says the island must adapt to changing tourist demands.
