No Problem Gambling from Blackjack and Poker, Says Australian
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA --
Victoria Premier John Bumbry says that there is "very little evidence" linking the playing of blackjack and poker to problem gambling, according to an article by The Age. The Australian politician said a decision to allow a big increase in the number of gaming tables permitted Crown Casino was made with the knowledge that doing so won't increase problem gambling.
Bumbry said that, given the lack of reason to believe compulsive gambling might increase, there is no reason to dent Crown the extra table games.
"We live in a free society ... If someone wants to have a bet on the races or have a bet at the casino, that's their business," Bumbry told Radio 3AW. He said it is not the state's job to "be a nanny and get in everybody's face and say what you can or can't do".
Bumbry did say slot machines may increase incidents of problem gambling as their numbers increase.
Scientific research over the last few years has demonstrated physiological causes for problem gambling, leading researchers to conclude that compulsive gambling percentages remain fairly fixed regardless of what games, if any, are available. Regions allowing no legal gaming test for about the same number of problem gamblers as regions allowing a multitude of gaming options.
A deal between the Victoria government and Crown Casino allows 150 new tables to be installed at the casino.
