Aintree Grand National Runners Prepare for Upset
LIVERPOOL --
For sports fans across the world, the largest gambling event of the year will take place this Saturday as the Aintree Grand National horse racing competition takes off in Liverpool.
The Grand National event will take place once again at Aintree Racecourse located on the outskirts of Liverpool on the A59 Ormskirk to Liverpool road, approximately 5 miles from the city centre. Fans can travel to the event by road, bus, or rail. If you're traveling from out of town, fly into the John Lennon Liverpool airport.
Experienced bettors seem to agree on one thing this year - Cloudy Lane is the clear odds-on favorite as the horse to beat at 11/2 odds. The horse is trained by Donald McCain, son of Grand National legend Ginger McCain (no relation to US Conservative presidential candidate John McCain). The next closest favorite is Slim Pickings and Comply or Dies, each seeded at 10/1 odds by top British sportsbooks.
Even though Aintree Grand National 2008 has gamblers feeling like their is a clear favorite to win, sports fans understand Grand National is one of the hardest sporting events in the world to wager on.
"This year everyone thinks Cloudy Lane is the top pick. I tend to believe conventional wisdom is usually incorrect", said one punter who is travelling in from New Zealand to attend the event.
Last year, Silver Birch took home the title led by Jockey RM Power. At age 10, Silver Birch was a 33/1 favorite. Either way, the Aintree Grand National race is sure to draw attention like no other sporting event in the world.
