Addicted Gambler Sues Seven Casinos
ATLANTIC CITY --
Arelia Taveras is suing 7 casinos for allowing her to gamble money at their casinos despite having an outward gambling addiction problem. Six of the casinos are in Atlantic City and the 7th is in Las Vegas. Taveras claims casino employees allowed her to gamble excessively while she was "out of control". She lost an estimated $1 million dollars while betting on games in the casinos. The casinos deny any wrongdoing citing the difficulty in spotting problem gamblers like herself.
Taveras says her wagering got out of control. There were times when she admitted playing 4 or 5 straight days without any sleep, without hardly any food or nutrition.
Now, she is trying to clean up her life and asking for $20 million dollars in damages in federal court against the casinos. She believes the casinos had a moral duty to stop accepting her bets after the compulsive gambling behavior became apparent.
"They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping," Taveras said. "I would pass out at the tables. They had a duty of care to me. Nobody in their right mind would gamble for 4or 5 straight days without sleeping."
During her times at the casinos, she lost her job, home, and is in debt over $100,000. There were times when she considered attempting suicide to ease the pain.
In the lawsuit, she names Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, as well as 4 others.
The casinos deny any wrongdoing, maintaining in court papers that Taveras brought her problems on herself. Gamblers can voluntarily place themselves on a "do-not-serve" list which bars them from playing at that particular casino. During the time on the list, casinos are not allowed to accept your wagers.
Ms. Taveras was not on the list of people casinos should be aware of, therefore the blame game will continue.

| An addict is a person constently on a gambling table. Why prosecute a drug dealer?? There providing for the addicts so they can have, just a good time. I hope this case can shed some light on the realty of people who work so hard to make a better life for themselfs and the ones that find a way to lure people into a state where there blinded. This country should act responsibly what good is a county filled with addicts either drugs,gambling,drinking,etc... its another reason why we can't build better cars, why everything we buy is made in china, why our currency can't compete. What good is having money if you can't uplift communitys create jobs, and educate or kids. Solution "put a limit on peoples gambling" could even depend on there incomes |
