West Virginia Casino Employees Upset Over Low Pay
WEST VIRGINIA --
Some 200 workers at the Mountaineer Casino and Racetrack in West Virginia have been on strike since Saturday at midnight. These people are mostly cashiers, slot mechanics, and money runners. They are members of the United Food and Commericial Workers union District 23.
As with most strikers, the workers walked-off the job as a result of a contract dispute with Mountaineer Casino. Local 23 workers believe their salaries are lower than competitors in wages and benefits, paying the unit an average wage of just $9.30 an hour. The starting hourly rate for cashiers is $6.50.
According to one source, "The pay is so low that some employees can't afford necessities such as health insurance".
According to the US Department of Labor, West Virginia is a state with a higher Minimum Wage than the federal government requires. Beginning on July 1, West Virginia minimum wage will increase to $7.25
Despite the loss of almost 10% of its workforce, Mountaineer Casino was in full-swing over the weekend as Saturday night crowds swarmed the casino.
