NASCAR Fantasy Play Leads to Washington Felony Gambling Charge
SPOKANE, WASHINGTON --
A resident of the Spokane area was arrested and charged with illegal online gambling Thursday. David B. Watkins is accused of operating a fantasy sports website for NASCAR fans that accepted money wagers.
Watkins allegedly operated a site called FantasyThunder.com, which allowed players to stake money on a selected field of NASCAR drivers. Race results generated winners, who received financial rewards.
A statement released by the Washington Gambling Commission said Watkins was keeping roughly half of all the money paid in byfantasy players. The commission noted the investigation into Watkins' activities began when some players filed complaints they had not been paid.
Watkins could receive up to five years in prison. Washington is the only state in which it is a felony not only to operate online gambling sites, but also just to play at Internet gaming.
FantasyTghunder operated for ten years or more, authorities say. It is not clear whether they were aware of the site. Fantasy sports are largely given a free pass by officials who otherwise aggressively pursue online gambling.
