NFL Hates Paying Even More Than Sports Gambling
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA --
The NFL is on record as a staunch opponent of all things gambling, even those forms such as online casinos that do not involve sports betting. But the NFL also is firm in its stance that it expects the public to provide it with free, cutting edge stadiums in which to make its billions.
In Minnesota, the two philosophies are conflicting, as the Minnesota Vikings demand a new home and lawmakers consider using racino gambling taxes to fund the project. Lobbyists for installing slots at Canterbury Park say as much as $40 million annually could go to a new stadium for the Vikings.
Vikings officials say a suitable new home for the team could be had for $42 million a year, which amounts to a lease payment; as soon as the payments are over, it's time to move on to the next stadium, the completed one being obsolete. At least, that's the figures generated if a new field, at $870 million, lasts the 28 years the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome has.
Racing supporters who suggest gambling taxes are a no-harm way to publicly fund the NFL's cost of doing business are opposed by those seeking to limit gaming expansion and tribal casino interests concerned that slots at race tracks means infringement on tribal revenue.
Meanwhile, NFL officials remain certain that the UIGEA is necessary, and online gambling should be opposed, while expecting US residents to compete with each other on the right to fund billion-dollar money machines to ensure continued massive profits for billionaires. It's the American Dream.
