Lotteries Feature $100 Million Christmas Jackpots
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
The two major multi-state lotteries in the US, Powerball and Mega Millions, both failed to produce a winning ticket this weekend, giving gambling patrons two shots at grabbing jackpots totalling over $100 million in time for Christmas. With the prizes rolling over, Powerball will reward any grand prize single winner with $106 million, while Mega Millions will carry a $162 million jackpot.
The next Mega Millions drawing is scheduled for Tuesday night. Powerball will hold a drawing on Wednesday night, giving any winner of either lottery Christmas Eve to do some unplanned last-minute shopping, if the numbers align right.
Five winners on Powerball's Saturday draw hit the five regular numbers on the lottery, but failed to match the Powerball. Each ticket is good for about $200,000.
Mega Millions drew last on Friday night, and had seven tickets match the five normal numbers, but miss the Mega Ball. Each of those winners collects $250,000.
Mega Millions operators expect huge ticket sales to follow if Tuesday's draw doesn't produce a grand prize winner. Gift ticket purchases and those looking for special luck on the scheduled Christmas night draw may drive the jackpot to close to $200 million.
