Casino Gambling in Rhode Island to Go 24 Hours Daily
LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND --
Twin River, the struggling greyhound track/ casino slot parlor, has announced it will open every day, all day, starting ten days away. The revenue-challenged gambling facility will expand its twenty-four hour operations from just weekends to every day of the year, beginning November 19th.
The gaming operation is under bankruptcy protection as it tries to find its way out from under $500 million in debt. Live greyhound racing runs in the red by several million dollars a year, leading Governor Donald Carcieri and others to propose limiting or even ending the dog races.
But legislative opponents have instead insisted that, if Twin River wants to operate slot gambling round the clock, it needed to actually increase the number of days live racing is held. Further, some sources have noted that the $20 million-plus that Twin River pays the state each month is far more onerous than the slight losses on live racing.
Gambling revenue from the track is the third-largest source of state income, according to the Associated Press.
Both legislators and operators hope the new gaming hours will draw more revenue and help the venue reorganize and emerge from bankruptcy.
