Trump Plaza Casino Dealers Want Out of Union
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
Over two years ago, Trump Plaza became one of four Atlantic City casinos whose dealers approved organizing by the United Auto Workers. Now, the casino's dealers want to be dealt out.
Since the union received approval to represent the workers, it has engaged with Trump officials to find a working agreement suitable to both parties. However, no deal has resulted, the same situation found with the Tropicana, Caesars Atlantic City, and Bally's Atlantic City casinos.
Dealers at the Plaza are now asking the National Labor Relations Board to release them from union ties. Thirty percent of dealers are required to sign a petition asking for a new vote as to whether to continue union representation.
UAW spokesmen say Trump and the other casinos are purposely avoiding progress on talks as a way to disenchant workers. The union has already approved walkouts at the other three casinos, although no strike date has been set.
Economic despair in Atlantic City has made bargaining next to impossible. Casino Earnings are dropping by double-digit percentages monthly, and roughly twenty percent of Atlantic City casino jobs have disappeared during the recession, bringing total jobs from 47,252 to 38,404.
