Former Tropicana Owners Reset As Low Budget Casino Gambling
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
The former operators of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City have devised a business strategy that may be what New Jersey casinos need to get out of the doldrums, but they no longer have the Tropicana to employ their method.
Tropicana Entertainment wants to establish itself as a brand representing low-cost high service casino gambling entertainment. The company would desperately love to convince New Jersey regulators that it is ready to handle the responsibility of a casino license again.
Tropicana Entertainment lost control of its eponymous resort after acquiring the property and immediately instituting massive layoffs, leading to labor troubles and vociferous complaints regarding cleanliness and service. The state's controllers removed the license in December 2007.
But the casino seems to be stuck in limbo in bankruptcy court, as attempts to sell the resort to new owners keep meeting snags. Meanwhile, the layoffs committed by the hotel's operators now aren't so shocking, seeming to have been merely ahead of the curve.
Atlantic City is struggling to find a new identity to keep its casinos thriving. A plan to convert to destination resorts a la Las Vegas has been effectively scuttled by the recession. Perhaps Tropicana Entertainment has the best idea in a low budget casino experience. If only they had a casino.
