Texas Lottery Asks State for More Games

By Brian Chan on October 6, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Texas lottery officials would like to blame the slumping economy for the recent decline in ticket sales, but other states are not experiencing drops. So lottery representatives are asking for new games, telling lawmakers that the $100 million sales decline from last year is due to a lack of variety.

Texas sales dropped 2.7 percent, while Arizona, New Jersey, and Missouri all increased substantially, Missouri by 6.5 percent. Scratchoffs account for three-quarters of the drop in ticket sales.

Adding keno was effective in raising revenue in Arizona. Expanding the available games would bring fresh concepts to a bored public.

Texas residents also wanted bigger pots, with more chances to reach megapots.

Proponents of less restriction on games say keno could bring as much as $200 million. Video lottery terminals to be placed at racetracks might earn as much as $1.4 billion.

Presently, only bingo, scratchoffs, and the Texas lottery are legal.
