Allen Stanford Hit While Down by Las Vegas Casino Suit
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
Disgraced financier Allen Stanford has one more worry to add to his mountain of troubles, as the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas filed a lawsuit against the accused swindler to collect a gambling debt. The luxurious resort says Stanford owes it $258,480, plus interest, in unpaid gambling markers.
Stanford was indicted earlier this year for bank fraud in the astonishing amount of $7 billion. The Texas businessman allegedly used his bank in Antigua to issue certificates of deposit, only to have Stanford support his extravagant lifestyle from the funds.
Since the discovery of the Ponzi scheme, Stanford has had his assets frozen by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, leaving him broke. He is in jail waiting for trial on twenty-one counts of assorted banking crimes.
No comment was available from Stanford's representatives regarding the Bellagio suit.
Stanford becomes the latest in a list of celebrities pursued by casinos for not honoring their markers. In Las Vegas, refusing to pay back a gaming marker is the equivalent of writing a bad check, and can lead to criminal prosecution. The Clark County District Attorney requires a ten percent fee be added if the marker is paid,to cover the county's time.
