Philly Smokers Demand Larger Share of Casino
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA --
Proponents of smoking bans across the country have asserted that removing smoking privileges at bars, casinos, and restaurants does not substantially affect business. Of course, if this were true, no one would have to be forced to ban smoking, as businesses would cater to non-smokers if they indeed represented such a majority of the public.
Now, statistics from PhiladelphiaPark Casino show that gambling areas permitting smoking are overwhelmed, while those barring smoking lay dormant. Wagering over the last three months at the casino showed 250 percent more revenue came from the quarter of the racino allowing smoking than from the three-quarters that did not.
Under Pennsylvania law, the casino will be allowed to double its smoking area space, to cover fifty percent of the casino floor. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said it had received similar requests from the state's other six casinos.
A spokesman for the American Cancer Society gave a subjective viewpoint expression, saying that it was wrong for the casino to endanger the lives of gambling patrons and employees to increase profits. The spokesman had no comment on whether it is right to force an unwanted lifestyle decision on patrons who clearly want their freedom of choice. Of course, gamblers are used to that from government.
