Casino Gambling Benefits Small Town USA
DOVER, DELAWARE --
The revenues generated for state budgets by gambling sometimes have a positive impact far from the casinos where they are collected. Brandywine School District, which services Claymont, Delaware, announced it would lay off fewer teachers than expected, due partly to gaming revenue.
Brandywine CFO David Blowman told the District Finance Committee today that five teachers would be laid off before the next school year. "The school district initially thought things would be much worse," he said.
Delaware's recent decision to legalize sports betting has added to anticpated gaming revenues, increasing money earmarked for education, Blowman said. He also noted the federal stimulus package and its conditions protecting education funding helped mitigate recessionary impact.
Brandywine employs eight hundred teachers; thirty-five positions will be eliminated by attrition.
"Gaming haters always talk about the harm gambling does to youth, but half of the US is going to school on casino dollars," said teacher Fred Lawson.
Blowman noted that public education in Delaware had a much smaller problem than other state services, mostly due to gaming funds.
