Seminole Indian Tribe Partners with New York Yankees
BRONX, NY --
In a press conference held at home plate of the new Yankee stadium, Seminole Indian Tribe spokesmen and New York Yankee executive staff announced a deal to allow the tribe to open a Hard Rock Cafe inside the new stadium.
The news comes as somewhat of a surprise as the Seminoles are better known for their casino, poker, and gambling enterprise in South Florida. As we all know, the tribe has had much success operating their mega-casinos in Broward county. Their experience and judgment in the restaurant business is still a question mark.
The Seminole Indian tribe deal with the New York Yankees will include a Hard Rock Cafe in the team's new $1 billion stadium and a new restaurant called NYY Steak, something the tribe plans to franchise in other locations around the country.
The new stadium is under construction in the Bronx and will be completed sometime in early 2009.
According to the CEO of the tribe, Jim Allen, ''The New York Yankees are the most popular sports franchise in the world, there's nobody better to partner with. This is proof of the credibility and financial strength of the Seminole Indian tribe.''
The Seminole tribe was not always financially secure. They began their rise in the 1970's selling discount cigarettes and high-stakes bingo games. The tribe now generates an estimated $2 billion a year in revenues, and operates 7 casinos in Florida, including the Hard Rock hotels and casinos near Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa.
The tribe has been criticized by some South Floridians who outright oppose their business. The new tribe casinos are accused of bringing down property values in the area, increased prostitution, drugs, crime, and bankrupting other entertainment venues in the Ft. Lauderdale area.
The tribe purchased the Hard Rock Cafe chain for nearly $1 billion in 2007.
