Seminole Casino Wins Court Ruling Over Blackjack
POMPANO BEACH, FL --
In a ruling late yesterday afternoon, a federal judge denied a Pompano Beach casino's effort to halt high-stakes blackjack and baccarat at the Seminole Casino in Hollywood, Florida. As you know, the Seminole Casino is owned and operated by the Seminole Indian Tribe, the largest sovereign indian tribe in Florida.
The judge said the tribe is "immune from such lawsuits".
U.S. District Judge Stephan P. Mickle's ruling is groundbreaking, as it could allow the tribe to offer the games indefinitely while other court battles continue over Seminole Indian Tribe casino gambling.
Yesterday's decision came despite last week's state Supreme Court ruling that invalidated a gambling agreement between lackluster Governor Charlie Crist and the Seminoles.
The agreement allowed the tribe to offer the table games in return for hundreds of millions in cash payments to the state. But the high court said the illegal games needed to be approved by the Legislature first.
Armed with the State Supreme court ruling, the Pompano Harness Racing Track sued Governor Crist and U.S. Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne in federal court, saying they should stop the illegal games from continuing.
As the only site with full gambling in South Florida, the Seminole Tribe has come under great scrutiny by other area businesses. Many blame increased local crime, drugs, and prostitution on the seemingly lawless casino hotel.
