Rhode Island Votes for Expanded Gambling Hours
NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND --
After a year-long debate, both houses of Rhode Island's legislature passed bills expanding legal gambling hours at the state's two slot casinos.
In order to generate more revenue for the cash-starved state, both the Twin River and Newport Grand locations will be open twenty-four hours on weekends and holidays, with regular closing hours extended until 3 a.m.
The measure passed the Senate 27-6, and the House 51-19. Now each bill, although identical, must be approved by the other chamber to advance to the governor.
Twin River estimated the extra hours could provide Rhode Island as much as $11.8 million this year.
A Republican minority opposes the bills, and there is some possibility that the governor may veto if casino-area residents come out strong against the changes.
