Rhode Island Governor Acts to Save Gambling Revenue
LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND --
Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri responded to the news this week that the Twin River casino is declaring bankruptcy with emergency pleas for expanded gambling and other moves to save the slot parlor. The state currently takes at least $20 million in revenue from the gaming venue, money that Carcieri says Rhode Island cannot afford to lose.
The governor ignored previous defeats of proposals to open Twin River twenty-four hours and said the casino needs to immediately be open around the clock to stay feasible. He also says the property should no longer be forced to continue running live greyhound racing, a condition imposed by law for the casino to get its slots license.
Twin River does actually have more than just slots, but its other games are also video, both for blackjack and roulette. Property operators have tried in the past to get around-the-clock operating hours, full gambling, and an end to dog racing, without success.
Carcieri attempted to pass off his ideas as the same gambling without expansion, as additional gaming may be a political powderkeg. He said he is not a gambling fan, but must protect the state's interest.
“Let me repeat that Twin River is open, and it is business as usual,’’ said Carcieri.
The governor did not address the issue that it may be the state's greed that cause the bankruptcy in the first place. By demanding the minimum of $20 million from the facility each month, Rhode Island put itself into the position of taking 61.5 percent of the house winnings, leaving Twin River with one of the worst gaming deals in the country.
