Penn Governor Threatens Layoffs Without Casino Gaming Bill

By Lance Burkhart on December 18, 2009  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania told state lawmakers to expect layoffs of state workers if they don't pass the bill legalizing table games at licensed casinos. Rendell says at least 1000 workers may be let go if the proposal to allow blackjack, baccarat, and other new games at gambling venues doesn't meet legislators' approval.

Rendell had to commit $700 million in state funds to universities Thursday, in order to retain $2 billion in federal contributions contingent on state payments. He said afterward that the move leaves the budget $250 million short, the projected amount legalized table gambling and redoing distribution of existing casino taxes could raise.

"If it's the will of the Legislature not to pass table games then we're $250 million short and I have to act accordingly," Rendell said. "My only option is to make severe cuts."

Spokesmen of labor unions representing state employees said their organizations would lobby lawmakers to vote for the casino gambling bill.

The legislature had seemed likely to approve the table gaming bill, but a clause introducing a new casino license for the state has caused infighting over whose territory would receive the boon of a new casino.
