Ease and Convenience Lead Online Casinos Over Horse Racing
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
The debacle over the slow demise of horse racing continues, and many are examining why other forms of gaming, including betting at online casinos, are bypassing racing in the public demand. According to an article in the New York Times, the ease and convenience of Internet gambling is a major cause of racing's decline.
The Times notes that, with the advent of slots and casino gambling, horse players have found new forms of gaming more entertaining and simpler to play successfully than wagering on horses. Although many think animal racing suffers from a lack of young aficionados, the point is made that horse racing has always been a sport for older players, but now no longer carries that demographic.
Instead, elderly patrons prefer casinos games, and as they adapt to the Internet, online slots and online poker become the choice of gaming. Even the advantage given racing by the US Department of Justice, which turns a blind eye to Internet gambling by US horse racing concerns although stating all online betting is illegal, is not enough to keep patrons from casinos.
Other problems noted by the Times include a perception of corruption. As boxing fans will attest, once the public becomes convinced matches or races are fixed, it becomes a Herculean feat to restore the luster of a clean reputation.
With team sports booming in popularity as sports betting grows to record heights, horse racing becomes the odd event out. Team betting lines are simple and easy to figure, while horse racing's money lines seem more designed for dedicated followers of the sport.
With regulation of online casinos apparently in the near future for the US, racing operators may be forced to shrink the number of tracks and rely more on simulcasting to satisfy what demand is left for their sport.
