US Sports Continue Gambling Deals as NHL Signs with Lottery
HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA --
The business relations between gambling operators and US sports teams continues to grow tighter as the Pennsylvania Lottery announced a new arrangement with the state's two hockey teams. The Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins will be featured on scratch-off tickets issued by the lottery.
The NHL, while not as openly disingenuous as the NFL, has been a party to the lawsuit preventing legal sports gambling at Delaware casinos. Sports groups have denounced gambling as a threat to game integrity, and vocally discouraged any ties between players and gaming.
But money is the best persuader to sports operators, and a payday for offering its images to the lottery is too much for the NHL to refuse. The hockey teams join the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies of MLB in signing lottery deals.
Problem gambling advocates say the lottery games are far more dangerous than sports betting, especially the "instant games" represented on scratch-off cards. Yet sports leaders crying of public morality jump quickly when a gambling profit beckons to them.
The new hockey games will be available throughout the hockey season. Meanwhile, fans of all the professional sports teams in Pennsylvania have the choice to fly to Las Vegas to bet on sports legally, or place bets illegal with unregulated books with possible ties to organized crime.
