Oregon Increases Casino Gambling with New Slots
SALEM, OREGON --
Like many states, Oregon is facing declines in gambling revenue generated by the lottery as a result of the recession. Using an option open to states but generally not available to licensed casinos, Oregon has decided to address the drop in earnings by placing more slot machines with new casino games in bars throughout the state.
Four hundred new gambling machines have already been installed, and state Lottery Director Dale Penn says 2100 more are scheduled to be put into establishments, either offering new outlets or replacing older, underperforming games.
"We're real hopeful that we can bring some players back and encourage others to play more," Penn said.
State officials say funding needed for schools and essential services provided by lottery income has declined drastically, affected not only by the economy but also a state smoking ban that has driven gambling players to seek their entertainment at tribal casinos, which are untouched by the smoking laws. Estimates are that the state may see as much as a $43 million drop in lottery revenue over the current year.
The new machines will feature nine separate slot games and three versions of video poker, according to the lottery chief.
"Having new games is very important," said Penn. "That's what players want to see."
