Ohio March to Casinos Delayed by Attorney General
COLUMBUS, OHIO --
The petition crafted by the Ohio Jobs and Growth Plan seeking voter signatures backing the scheme to build four casinos in Ohio was denied by the state Attorney General. Richard Cordray said the gaming petition, which outlines plans to place a gambling venue in each of four Ohio cities, needed to rework language in two areas.
The AG wants the petition to specify the sites for the casinos. Although the cities are named as Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo, the exact locations are not included in the petition.
More worrisome to the law enforcement official is language which seems to exempt gaming winnings from state taxation. Gambling winnings are considered taxable income under Ohio and US law.
Cordray feels that voters cannot make a correct decision on whether they approve of the casino plan unless it is clear where they would be built, and that there are no tax benefits directly affecting potential patrons.
A spokesman for the casino group said it was not the group's intention to make winnings tax-free, and that the specified language would be cleaned up and resubmitted.
Ohio resident Archie Goodwin said, "I am tired of driving to Illinois and Indiana to play casino games. Just move it along, and the state wins as well as the people!"
