Oklahoma Tribal Casino Gambling Revenue Climbs
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA --
Tribal gambling revenue from casinos in Oklahoma topped $3 billion for the first time, according to figures released this week. Numbers announced by the National Indian Gaming Commission say the midwestern state had the best growth of any casino region in the US.
The commission tracks Oklahoma as two separate regions, each grouped with a neighboring gambling-free state from whom it draws patrons. Eastern Oklahoma, including the Kansas border, contains sixty-two gambling venues and produced $1.7 billion in total revenue.
The western region, which covers the Texas border, hosts forty-eight casinos, and generated $1.35 billion. Both regions showed growth in the area of eighteen percent over figures from last year.
Of all tribal casino areas, only those two showed double-digit growth for the period. Nationally, growth was up two and a quarter percent, as Indian gaming created $27 billion in revenue, from over four hundred gaming operations across the US.
The senior vice-president of Cherokee Nation Enterprises, Mark Fulton, says the boom in gaming comes from tribes' commitment to the community, citing reinvestment policies which have developed the casinos into multi-purpose resorts.
"The growth of all of the gaming operations in Oklahoma helped legitimize and position the region as a viable vacation destination when people were wanting to travel closer to home," said Fulton.
