Location of Columbus Casino Latest Ohio Gambling Issue
COLUMBUS, OHIO --
After a contentious campaign that resulted in the passage of a bill allowing four licensed casinos in Ohio, residents may have felt the issue could be put to bed. But now, determining where in Columbus its designated casino will go is awakening the same fiery discussions.
The casino is slated to go up in downtown Columbus. But Mayor Michael Coleman thinks gambling in the downtown area would disrupt the carefully planned family theme in the arera, and wants the casino moved to a closed factory site on the western edge of town.
Now the situation has returned to the state ballot, as any shift from the approved bill requires voters' approval.
Gambling opponents have come out against the relocation, saying it gives special discriminatory treatment to Columbus businesses. Other voters say they'll vote "yes," because the gaming law has already passed.
Columbus residents say the casino will be built, and since the only question is where, they support moving the location. But voters around the state are saying enough is enough, and want the casino issue marked resolved and closed.
