Ohio Casinos One Step Closer with Petition Approval
COLUMBUS, OHIO --
The possibility of Ohio casino gambling increased as a state agency gave permission for casino proponents to start gathering signatures on the petition to put the issue before voters. The Ohio Ballot Board reviewed the petition submitted by Ohio Jobs and Growth and determined it met legal requirements, freeing the casino gaming measure to be circulated.
The Ballot Board voted 4-1 that the proposal to license four Ohio casinos could be presented on the ballot as a single issue to amend the state constitution, clearing the way for the petition to be signed by residents. The measure will need just over 400,000 signatures by a July deadline to earn placement before the electorate.
The Ohio casino plan is sponsored by Penn National Gaming and Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans and the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ironically, Penn National was one of the primary lobbyists helping to defeat a previous plan to bring a single casino to the state.
In a weird display of karma, the main funding for opponents of the casino plan may come from MTR Gaming, a gambling operator that owns race tracks, including one in Columbus. MTR is determined to block any legislation that allows competition to animal racing without providing subsidies for the industry.
"Our goal is to run the best campaign that we can to convince Ohio voters of the merits of our proposal," said Bob Tenenbaum, a spokesman for the casino group.
