Obama Offends Las Vegas Casino Interests Again
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
President Obama had only just started to heal the wounds created by his attacks last year on Las Vegas conventions when he once again aroused Nevada gambling operators in a speech today. Obama used traveling to Las Vegas as an example of what not to do in tough economic times, despite the quandary of the casino resorts upon which Las Vegans depend.
"When times are tough, you tighten your belts," the President told a high school audience. "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college."
The casino and tourist industries in Nevada are among the hardest hit in the US by the recession. Unemployment across the state is among the nation's highest, and only recently have there been signs of recovery.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid deserted his usual post as Obama's staunch supporter to protest the statement. Reid is fighting for his political life in an election bid where he is trailing potential opponents, and can't withstand further disapproval by Nevada voters, who register only one in three in support of him.
"The President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money," said Reid in a written statement.
Representative Shelley Berkeley came out even stronger for the casinos and resorts of Las Vegas, saying, "President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars."
Obama quickly apologized, telling Reid in a letter that Vegas is "one of our country's great destinations," and said he hopes record numbers visit the gambling capital.
