Baseball Pops Out on Reno Minor-League Gambling Policy
RENO, NEVADA --
Nevada Gambling regulators told state casinos that sports books are not to accept bets on the Triple-A team from Reno. The state Gaming Control Board is enforcing a provision in Nevada gambling regulations installed at Major League Baseball's request in 1985 to not accept plays on any Nevada baseball teams.
The exploits of the Reno Aces had been a growing topic in northern Nevada, where several sports books had offered plays on the new minor league affiliate of MLB. But now, local observers are predicting a precipitous drop in Ace interest.
"We had a brand new product and people were taking to it. The Aces generated more business than I thought they would," said Nick Bogdanovich, race and sports director for the Club Cal Neva in downtown Reno.
The bets were made available more to please the public and generate interest as to create any casino profit. While most sports lines are scientifically derived and measured, Bogdanovich admitted the rotating players and uncertain team goals of the minor leagues made setting lines like throwing random darts.
MLB officials had no comment, except to reinforce the league policy of zero tolerance for sports gambling.
"How am I supposed to have fun at a Reno Aces game if I can't bet on it?" sports fan Thomas Rossi told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "Oh well, it was fun while it lasted."
