NFL Owners OK Team Payments from Lottery Gambling
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS --
After years of staunchly denying any good to its game from gambling, the NFL this week approved partnerships between teams and local lotteries, paying the clubs for use of brands and logos on game themes and scratch-off tickets. The league's stance toward online casinos, sports betting, and the Delaware lottery became even harder for football representatives to justify as gambling, for the first time, directly fed NFL coffers.
To appear consistent with their complaint against the Delaware sports lottery, league owners were forced to voice approval for lottery participation only when games are based on chance. The NFL has filed with Delaware courts its contention the state sports betting program is against lottery rules as a game of skill.
"So now, the NFL has backed itself into a corner in which it must pretend to believe state games of chance with a payback rate of less than fifty percent are harmless, while online slots paying back better than ninety-eight percent and poker games decided by skillful play are dangerous," said gambling law expert Rod Fontes.
The New England Patriots were the first team to cash in, signing yesterday with the Massachusetts lottery. The Washington Redskins were next, reaching agreement with the Virginia state gambling authority.
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Tennessee, Detroit, Minnesota, and all three teams in the state of New York are all reportedly progressing toward lottery deals. Major League Baseball had already run some games in conjunction with lottery officials.
